Steve Walsh Blog – 29th December 2012

Merry Christmas everybody hope you all had a good time!

Wish I could say that to the lads but so far Xmas has yielded a good away point only so let’s hope we can get back to winning ways quickly and set off the New Year with a bang. A tough game at Burnley today will be helped if we can keep Charlie Austin quiet and get Jamie Vardy fit enough to start. 3 pts against Huddersfield on Tuesday will be a great way to kick off 2013 against my old mate Simon Grayson! The last sequence of results has seen us lose some valuable ground as our fabulous home form takes a stutter with a point against Barnsley and loss to promotion rivals Cardiff at fortress KP.

I think it is quite clear now that a clinical finisher is needed. Craig Bellamy showed us all how it’s done and that is the difference. When you compare stats we are right up there as having the most possession creating an abundance of chances every game. Our goal difference is still second to none with a rock solid defence that hasn’t conceded many goals. If we take a look at the league table you will see that our away form needs to improve in terms of goals for. At home we are creating & scoring plenty with 26 goals for. If you would have asked me would we have taken this position before the season started, I would have taken it because we are in a great position. Look at it 2 weeks ago it was so much better but as we all know this is what can happen in football and I believe if Nigel gets the players he wants in January then we can put together another run to get back amongst challenging for automatic positions.

There are a number of rumours doing the rounds, one being that Chris Woods is being signed from West Brom and another is that Craig Davies, the Barnsley striker who scored 4 against Birmingham is also being lined up. Either way, the club have recognised that more firepower will get us up challenging for an automatic spot.

Cardiff suddenly have catapulted well clear of us after two great wins against us and Palace and I have to say they looked pretty solid as a unit, well organised and hard to break down -that is how they won the game. It could have been so much different if luck was on our side as the woodwork robbed us 3 times. But when you have a class finisher in your team then you have got every chance. It’s not a time to be negative as Hull was a great point and it’s onto the next game and good luck Nigel we all believe in you.
